Beginning French I is an introduction to the French language. It presents the fundamentals necessary for understanding, speaking, reading, and writing basic French. Class contents include pronunciation and basic vocabulary, greetings and other social conventions, the concepts of gender and adjective agreement, and the present tense with regular and irregular verbs. Class procedures include extensive practice in conversation, drill in basic grammatical structures, reading of short passages in French, dictations, and simple composition. Students receive a basic introduction to French history, culture, and geography. 3 credits
